PS5 Jailbreak App “Overdrive” Allegedly Offers Free Games and DLC
It isn’t the only such app. Orbit Store, an open-source beta from developer saawant12, offers a similar storefront with 147 games linked from Archive.org, though its developer says Orbit doesn’t host any files itself. Both arrive shortly after Relapse, a public jailbreak for PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles on firmware 7.00 through 13.60. The homebrew scene has been busy since, with PS2 discs now loading and Halo 2 reportedly hitting 30 FPS via an Xbox emulator. Sony has been actively pushing back against the jailbreak, releasing firmware 14.00 that sits outside Relapse’s range, and the October 1 update (14.10) added more security fixes. With no official downgrade path, updating currently means losing the jailbreak.
As for Overdrive, readers are advised to stay away from this app. Jailbreaking voids the warranty and can get a PSN account banned, and running unsigned apps from unknown sources is an easy way to invite malware or brick the console. Downloading paid games this way is, of course, piracy, which TechPowerUp does not condone. Sony hasn’t commented yet, though it’s reasonable to expect the company to squash Overdrive quickly, probably with another firmware update.
Update Oct 14th: Sony Interactive Entertainment has reportedly sent the developers of Overdrive a cease-and-desist letter, effectively shutting down the app.
