Hulu Snags Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Reboot for Full Series
Hulu has ordered a full series for Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of The X-Files. The show stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two highly decorated FBI agents who form an unlikely bond while investigating a shuttered division focused on unexplained phenomena. These are new characters, not versions of the iconic Mulder and Scully from the original.
Coogler wrote, directed, and executive produced the pilot, which Hulu picked up in February. He’ll continue as an executive producer alongside showrunner Jennifer Yale. The project comes from Proximity Media, Coogler’s company, and 20th Television, with original creator Chris Carter also on board as an executive producer.
“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting to write and direct the pilot meant a lot to me,” Coogler said. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor what made the original connect with people while carving out our own path. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of the cast, have brought fresh perspectives, and watching it all come together has been incredibly rewarding.”
This is Coogler’s biggest project since his Oscar-winning film Sinners, which scored a record 16 nominations. The original X-Files ran for 11 seasons on Fox, earning 61 Emmy nominations and 15 wins, becoming a sci-fi staple.
Deadwyler and Patel previously starred together in the HBO Max miniseries Station Eleven. Deadwyler is known for roles in The Harder They Fall, Till, and The Piano Lesson, while Patel has appeared in EastEnders, Yesterday, and The Odyssey.
