Enchanted by the Bison: New Mexico craves a huge battle in the high desert
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Frontier Restaurant, sitting right across from the University of New Mexico campus on Central Avenue, is the perfect spot to feel the local pulse. On a Friday afternoon, the place was packed, and the talk was all about the big football game on Saturday. The Lobos are hosting the North Dakota State Bison, and the city is absolutely buzzing.
Locals like Joseph Gallegos, waiting in line for a famous green chile burrito, are ready for a real battle. “It’s going to be a helluva game,” Gallegos said, sporting a ponytail and a Lobos shirt. He knows NDSU is tough, and he expects a “fistfight.”
This level of excitement is something new for New Mexico. Just a couple of years ago, the team was struggling, and nobody was talking about football. But under head coach Jason Eck, the energy has completely flipped. The school is selling tickets like crazy, with about 31,000 already gone for the 37,440-seat university stadium. People call it “Eckmania,” and it’s real.
At the campus bookstore, fans like Renee and Steve Garcia were grabbing their gear. Renee noted how much more fun the game days have become, with food trucks, music, and a lively atmosphere on Lobo Lane. Steve held up a fresh black UNM sweatshirt, ready for the big event. Naomi Yavneh Klos, the dean of the Honors College, was also shopping, loading up on UNM hats and shirts. It will be her very first Lobos football game. Coming from a school without a team, she is thrilled to have college football right here and is proud that the athletic department has deep ties to the honors college.
The visiting fans won’t be quiet either. A strong wave of green and yellow is expected. Flights from Fargo were packed with Bison supporters. Verlyn Bailly, a 1978 NDSU grad living in Ohio, traveled down with his son for the game. They picked Albuquerque over Hawaii or Vegas, looking forward to a great matchup.
With New Mexico favored by just a few points, the game promises to be a tight, thrilling contest. The winner gets a major boost in the race to the Mountain West championship. For the fans in Albuquerque, it’s a dream weekend, and the local dean summed up the vibe perfectly: “I hope you go home sad.”
