Kotek, Drazan square off in final debate of governor’s race – USFTB
The final debate between Democratic Governor Tina Kotek and Republican state Senator Christine Drazan took place in Bend, bringing the focus to Central and Eastern Oregon. Kotek argued that many of the state’s problems stem from President Donald Trump’s policies and claimed Drazan would support him. Drazan, in turn, accused Kotek of failing to deliver on promises made four years ago. The discussion, hosted by KTVZ, covered a range of topics including housing, education, healthcare, the economy, and data centers. When asked about rural areas and secessionist sentiment, Kotek emphasized her visits to all 36 counties and her fight to preserve Medicaid. Drazan countered that Kotek is disconnected from rural life, pointing to a gas tax proposal and a climate bill. On housing, Drazan pledged to reduce building regulations and reform land use laws, while Kotek noted an increase in new housing units. Regarding homelessness, Kotek highlighted a 19% drop in Central Oregon, but Drazan argued the state should prioritize treatment and recovery over simply providing housing. Kotek criticized Drazan for opposing a tax package that funds the Oregon Health Plan, while Drazan said she voted against new taxes. The debate also addressed education, economic development, and water rights. With polls showing a close race, ballots are set to be mailed out.
