Tragic Shooting Claims Abbygail Somoza, 22, During Halloween Prep in Chicago
Abbygail Somoza, a 22-year-old woman, was shot and killed Saturday night while standing on the sidewalk with her mother outside their old home in Little Village, Chicago. They had just gotten back from a shopping trip and were chatting about getting ready for Halloween, which was Abbygail’s favorite time of year. Her aunt, Gina Somoza, said they were talking about decorations when it all happened. A small memorial with a plush bat now sits outside the house. Neighbors mentioned that police had been called earlier that day because of some gang activity, but the officers had left before the shooting. Cops haven’t said if they have any suspects or if there were multiple shooters. People nearby stopped by the memorial to pay their respects but didn’t want to show their faces because they’re scared. One neighbor, who’s known Abbygail since she was a kid, described the moment after the shots: ‘I ran out, called an ambulance, and comforted her mom. She just said she heard the shots, then Abbygail said it hurt, and she collapsed.’ Gina remembered Abbygail as a sweet girl who always put family first. She was working at a fast-food place to save up for cosmetology school because she dreamed of doing nails for people. ‘They killed our only princess,’ Gina said. ‘It’s changed us forever.’ The police are still investigating and haven’t shared more details.
