The U.S. Department of the Treasury does far more than collect taxes. It manages federal borrowing by issuing bills, notes, and bonds, and it runs the payment systems that deliver benefits, salaries, and contract money. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing prints paper money, while the Mint produces coins. Within the department, FinCEN analyzes financial data to spot money laundering, fraud, and terrorist financing, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control enforces sanctions that block transactions with certain countries, groups, or individuals. Although Treasury works with the Federal Reserve, the two are separate: Treasury handles debt and spending, the Fed sets monetary policy. Public reports, congressional testimony, and FOIA requests provide transparency, letting people verify claims against official records. These behind‑the‑scenes functions shape interest rates, currency supply, and the safety of the financial system.
