Manchester United are in a real spot of bother as they head to Spain to take on Atlético Madrid. After losing to Fulham and Tottenham, the pressure is really on Michael Carrick. His side need a reaction, and they need it fast. Atlético, on the other hand, are flying, winning their last four games in La Liga, including a big derby victory. The only thing is, they lost their last Champions League outing at Anfield, so they know they cannot take anything for granted.
The clash of characters is stark. Diego Simeone is fiery and intense, while Carrick is trying to stay calm and steady the ship. In team news, there is sad news for Atlético as captain Koke misses the game after the passing of his mother. There will be a moment of silence before kick-off, and the team will wear black armbands. Up front, Julian Alvarez starts, looking to make his mark after wanting to leave in the summer.
For United, Marcus Rashford is back in the starting line-up, and there are some interesting choices in midfield. Youri Tielemans is pushed further forward, while Bruno Fernandes is expected to play out wide or even as a false nine. Baleba comes into the side to add some energy after his performance against Spurs, and Andrey Santos anchors the midfield alongside him. At the back, it looks like Yoro starting at left-back.
Carrick spoke before the match, staying positive despite the tough start. He said they hoped for more and expected more, but they have to accept where they are and keep building. He emphasised the need to control the game, defend as a whole team, and show the capability they have proven they possess. With 3,750 fans travelling to Madrid, United need a performance that gives the supporters something to cheer about.
