So, the New York Yankees kicked off their ALDS series against the Rays and took a 1-0 loss on Saturday. Now they’re heading back to Tampa for Game 2, trying to even things up. But the real talk is about a roster decision that’s got fans buzzing. The Yankees sent outfielder Jasson Domínguez down to the minors back in September and left him off both the Wild Card and ALDS playoff rosters. That’s a big move, especially when you consider what Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez said about him just months ago.
Back in May, A-Rod was on WFAN and gushed over Domínguez, saying, ‘Domínguez at center gives you youth, speed, and here’s a guy that’s gonna be a future All-Star.’ Man, that’s high praise from a guy who knows the game. But now, looking at Domínguez’s stats, it’s hard to see that future All-Star material shining through. He finished the regular season batting .225 with 47 hits, six home runs, 14 RBIs, 22 runs, and eight stolen bases in 57 games. Not exactly star numbers.
And it’s not just this season. Over his four years in the majors, Domínguez has played 206 games, hitting .241 with 163 hits, 22 home runs, 72 RBIs, 94 runs, and 37 stolen bases. He’s been in four playoff games, but that’s not a lot to work with. At just 23 years old, he’s had his chances, but the Yankees might be thinking he’s not the spark they need right now.
Meanwhile, the Yankees as a team finished second in the AL East with a 93-68 record. They swept the Red Sox in the Wild Card Series, but they haven’t won a World Series since 2009. So, every move counts in their chase for a title. This decision on Domínguez could be a sign that the team is prioritizing proven players over potential, and it might just show that A-Rod was a bit too optimistic. What do you think? Did the Yankees make the right call, or did they miss out on a key piece?
