Why Is Everyone Ignoring Trade Desk Stock’s High Cash Yield? – USFTB

Trade Desk (TTD) stock closed on October 16, 2026, 91.2% below its high of December 4, 2024. That steep decline has made the company’s cash unusually cheap to buy. At the closing price of $12.23 a share, the company carried a market value of $5.7 billion. Its free cash flow over the last twelve months equals 14.8% of that value, compared with 4.4% for the median S&P 500 company. A yield that high indicates either a steeply discounted business or one the market expects to shrink. So has Trade Desk’s cash already started to shrink?

Trade Desk’s Free Cash Flow Has Kept Growing

Trade Desk produced $849 million of free cash flow over the four quarters ended June 30, 2026, up from $746 million a year earlier. Shareholders own a share of that cash just as they own a share of the profit, regardless of whether the company pays it out. Once investors give the business credit for the cash it retains, the share price tends to follow. That pattern holds especially true when the cash is growing.

Trade Desk operates a global technology platform for buyers of advertising. Over the last twelve months, capital spending consumed $233 million, or 21.5% of the cash brought in by operations. The company has maintained positive free cash flow in all 13 twelve-month periods covered by our data going back to mid-2023. Over the twelve months ended June 30, 2024, free cash flow stood at $481 million. The operating margin rose to 19.6% over the last twelve months, up from 17.7% a year earlier. Yet net income still fell to $407 million from $417 million.

Trade Desk ended June with $1.5 billion in cash and short-term investments, weighed against $434 million of debt.

Management Forecasts Lower Sales For Trade Desk

The current share price appears to assume a sales slowdown will reach the cash. Management’s own forecast points to falling sales. For fiscal Q3 2026, the company guided to revenue of at least $650 million, below the $739 million it reported for the same quarter of 2025. While that decline remains a forecast rather than a result, it follows fiscal Q2 2026, when revenue grew 3% from a year earlier, compared with 18.7% growth in the same quarter of 2025.

Some of that slowdown has already shown up in profit. During fiscal Q2 2026, the operating margin fell to 14.2%, down from 16.8% in fiscal Q2 2025.

On the August 6 earnings call, management stated that economic conditions have made it harder for some of the world’s largest brands to grow. They also acknowledged the company did not execute as well as it could have. Consumer goods and auto makers account for about 25% of the business, and management noted that tariffs and oil prices have set both sectors back. When asked how much of the slowdown the company could control, management described it as more a cyclical issue tied to a handful of customers. In September, Trade Desk laid off 15% of its staff as it reorganized into smaller pods.

What To Watch In Trade Desk’s November Report

With more cash than debt, Trade Desk can carry what it owes. The open question is whether its cash will continue to grow while sales slow. The company is expected to release its next report, for fiscal Q3 2026, on or around November 5, 2026. Trade Desk’s free cash flow over twelve months will be the measure to watch in that report.

How To Act On TTD?

Not necessarily on Trade Desk alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Here is one company from Trade Desk’s own industry that has beaten it. Over the five years to October 2026, Omnicom stock rose 26%, while Trade Desk stock fell 84%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000. See how we find the leaders.
