When does daylight saving time end this fall? – NBC Chicago

As the leaves change and the days get shorter, Chicago-area residents are going through the final few weeks of daylight saving time.

Sunsets are already occurring earlier in the day, but that will accelerate in a matter of weeks when clocks roll back one hour in the march toward winter in the city.

So when will that date take place?

Under federal law, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday of March, and lasts until the first Sunday of November.

This year, that means daylight saving time will end on Sunday, November 1, giving Chicago-area residents less than three weeks of later sunsets.

In fact, by the time daylight saving time ends, the city will still be losing around two minutes and 30 seconds of daylight per day anyway, and sunsets will take place at 4:44 p.m. by November 1, according to TimeandDate.

As November moves along, Chicago will slowly start to lose less daylight per day, but by the end of the month the city will be seeing just nine hours and 23 minutes of daylight per day.

The earliest sunsets of the year will then take place in early December, and by the time the winter solstice rolls around, the city will be at just over nine hours of daylight per day, with days slowly getting longer after December 21.

As for when daylight saving time will resume, that will take place a bit later than normal next year thanks to the calendar, with the second Sunday of March falling on March 14.

Shortly thereafter, the city will begin seeing more than 12 hours of daylight per day beginning on March 18, with the spring equinox occurring just a few days after that.
