What’s Wrong with the Flyers? The Roster Just Isn’t Working

The Philadelphia Flyers have gotten off to a miserable 0-6-3 start this season, and it’s clear they’re in serious trouble just weeks into the new year. After a second-round playoff appearance last year, expectations were high coming into training camp, but right now, they barely look like a playoff team. They could be on the brink if things don’t turn around quickly. The Flyers have plenty of talent—a good mix of young players and veterans, plus solid goaltending—but for some reason, nothing is clicking. Underneath it all, there are major issues with how the roster is constructed, and those problems are showing up in the early games.

The roster is stuck between two timelines: they’ve got young talent that needs time to grow, and veterans who are taking up a lot of cap space. This mix often works for other teams, but with the holes the Flyers have, it’s not cutting it. There’s a huge gap down the middle at center ice, which is why they went after Leo Carlsson, but they haven’t found that top-end player to drive the offense. Sure, they have centers like Trevor Zegras and Sean Couturier who get the job done, but they’re not the kind of elite players that scare opponents. Depth guys like Christian Dvorak and Noah Cates are fine, but without a true number-one center, the Flyers have to rely on committee play to create chances, and that hasn’t been working this year.

This summer, the Flyers’ strategy seemed to focus on adding NHL players rather than pieces that could really fix the roster. Adding Joseph Woll as a backup goalie and Simon Benoit on defense was okay, and Noel Acciari filled a fourth-line role nicely, but none of that solved the biggest problems: the need for a top center and an offensive defenseman with some edge. GM Daniel Briere did some good work with supporting roles, but his big move for a major piece fell through, and he didn’t have a backup plan. Now, the Flyers are paying the price for that inaction.

Another big issue is the power play. Last season, they finished dead last at 15.7%, and this year hasn’t been much better. They have skilled forwards like Zegras, Matvei Michkov, Travis Konecny, and Owen Tippett who should be able to turn things around on the man advantage, but they haven’t stepped up. Jamie Drysdale is a talented offensive defenseman, but he hasn’t become the power play quarterback they need. The defense core—including Travis Sanheim, Cameron York, Rasmus Ristolainen, and David Jiricek—is decent, but it’s not good enough to stop top offensive teams or compensate for the other weaknesses.

Overall, the roster has talent and youth, but it’s missing those elite game-breakers that every team needs. The Flyers were counting on big improvements from young players like Michkov and Porter Martone, but asking a rookie and a sophomore to make up for roster deficiencies is a lot. Last year’s playoff run, where they surged down the stretch, might have been misleading—it showed they could win in short bursts, but not over a full season. Making the playoffs was a big deal after missing out since 2020, but Briere still has to answer whether that success was sustainable. Not adding key pieces over the summer was a risk, and so far, it’s backfiring.

The poor start doesn’t mean the Flyers are a bad team or that Briere made terrible decisions. They have strengths, like young offensive talent and a capable goalie tandem. But the holes at center, the power play struggles, and the lack of a PP quarterback are real problems. If they can figure those out, they have a chance to turn things around.
