Suns Make Final Starting Center Decision for Opening Night vs Blazers – USFTB
The Phoenix Suns have finally settled their starting center debate, naming Khaman Maluach as the starter for opening night against the Portland Trail Blazers. The decision came as a surprise, with Maluach getting the nod over Oso Ighodaro. The battle between the two took place throughout training camp and the preseason, following Mark Williams’ shoulder injury in the offseason. Coach Jordan Ott explained that while they waited as long as possible to decide, they don’t plan on swapping the starting five on a game-by-game basis, meaning Maluach is likely to hold the role moving forward. Ott noted the need for 48 minutes of solid center play and praised both big men for embracing the competition. Maluach is heading into his second season after a strong summer, while Ighodaro, who recently signed a three-year, $29 million extension, brings more experience to the table. Alongside Maluach, the rest of the starting lineup looks as expected: Jalen Green, Devin Booker, Dillon Brooks, and Miles Bridges. With Luke Kennard sidelined with a knee injury, Phoenix will run a nine-man rotation. On the other side, Portland presents a challenge with a new coach in Micah Nori and a revamped backcourt featuring a healthy Damian Lillard and new acquisition Ja Morant. The Suns will also need to find a way to slow down Deni Avdija, who has historically given Phoenix trouble. Tip-off is set for just after 7 p.m. MST.
