Sharks Rely on Yaroslav Askarov as Alex Nedeljkovic Takes a Backseat
The San Jose Sharks are leaning more on young goalie Yaroslav Askarov this season, giving him the bulk of the starts early on. After splitting duties last year, Askarov has already played in five of the last six games, including a recent homestand against Boston. Coach Ryan Warsofsky explained that the schedule has allowed them to focus on Askarov, who has been giving the team chances to win each night.
Alex Nedeljkovic, the veteran goalie, understands the situation and fully supports the move. He signed a two-year extension in March, knowing that Askarov, a first-round pick, is seen as the franchise’s future. Nedeljkovic, who has over 200 NHL games of experience, had one start this season and performed well in a win over St. Louis. He emphasized that he’s ready to step in when needed and is focused on helping Askarov develop.
Askarov’s early stats show a 2-2-0 record with a .860 save percentage, but the Sharks’ defense has been shaky at times, allowing high-danger chances. Despite that, Askarov has kept them in games. The team faces a busy road trip with back-to-back games, so Nedeljkovic will likely get some starts. The Sharks are hoping Askarov takes a big step forward this season, and Nedeljkovic remains a reliable backup.
Warsofsky praised both goalies, saying Nedeljkovic is a true pro who works hard and will play when called upon. The Sharks are still finding their stride, but with Askarov getting more ice time, they’re building around his growth.
