End of an Era: Philadelphia’s First Queer Women’s Sports Bar Marsha’s Closes
Philadelphia’s first queer women’s sports bar, Marsha’s, is closing its doors for good. Located on South Street in the Queen Village neighborhood, the owners announced on social media that this weekend will be the last, thanking everyone for their support. They shared that they’ve loved serving the community and hope someone steps up to fill the void left behind. Marsha’s made history when it opened last summer, putting women’s sports on the big screen. But the bar faced challenges, including allegations of a hostile work environment. Owner Chivonn Anderson said the backlash hurt business, even though she believes the claims are untrue. She mentioned personally funding the bar to keep it afloat, but it wasn’t enough to sustain it.
