Michael Douglas is finally setting the record straight about a romance that has been rumored about for decades. In his upcoming memoir, ‘One Helluva Ride’, the 82-year-old actor admits he and Kathleen Turner were secretly lovers while they filmed the 1984 adventure classic ‘Romancing the Stone’.
Douglas wrote that the spark between them was instant, calling Turner smart, funny, and sexy with that signature sultry voice. At the time, he was still technically married to Diandra Luker, but he says their relationship was already falling apart, and both of them were looking for connections elsewhere. The pressure of the shoot, the close working relationship, and pure attraction led to a real-life romance behind the scenes, mirroring the love story unfolding on screen for their characters, Jack and Joan.
They kept the affair completely quiet for 40 years to protect Douglas’s son, Cameron, and his ex-wife. Nobody on set—not their director Bob Zemeckis or co-star Danny DeVito—ever caught on. Douglas would sneak into Turner’s hotel room late at night after everyone else was asleep, and they would quietly go to dinner together, hiding from the cameras that just weren’t around back then.
The relationship eventually wound down, partly because Luker visited the set with young Cameron and made it clear to Turner that Douglas was still her husband. Douglas and Luker officially split years later, with their divorce finalized in 2000, the same year Douglas married Catherine Zeta-Jones.
As for Turner, she seems to be taking the news in stride. She brushed off the fuss over a forty-year-old secret, saying she loves Michael and is excited to read his book. After all this time, one of Hollywood’s biggest secrets is finally out in the open.
