David Surkamp, frontman and lead vocalist of Pavlov’s Dog, which played a 1976 concert in Detroit, died Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 73 years old.

An original member of the St. Louis-based progressive rock band, Surkamp led the group’s 1970s-era launch and rejoined when the band came back together in the 1990s, and again in the early 2000s. He had continued performing with the group this spring and tour dates were planned for 2027 in Australia.

Pavlov’s Dog violinist and mandolinist Abbie Steiling announced Surkamp’s death, which she called unexpected, in an Oct. 14 social media post on behalf of the band. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

“David leaves behind a legacy of endless creativity, unmistakable artistry, and a body of music that has touched lives across generations and around the world. But anyone who knew and loved him knows that his legacy reaches far beyond the songs. David had a profoundly poetic spirit and a romantic heart that found its way into every note, every lyric, and every performance. His music was deeply emotive, reaching straight into the hearts of listeners, giving voice to longing, to love, to beauty, and to the bittersweet ache of it all,” the post read.

Surkamp’s his wife Sara Surkamp died in late 2025. He is survived by their children, Saylor and Evan.

In 2005, the “Live in Detroit 1976” album was released.

“Pavlov’s Dog are one of the most revered prog outfits to have emerged from 1970s America,” Discogs says. “This WABX-FM radio broadcast of their performance at the Ford Auditorium, Detroit, on May 14th, 1976, is an extremely rare document of the original band, boasting the unique vocals of David Surkamp, as well as Steve Scorfina (lead guitar), Doug Rayburn (Mellotron, guitar), Tom Nickeson (keyboards), Richard Stockton (bass), and Kirk Sarkisian (drums). The material is culled from their classic albums Pampered Menial (1975) and At the Sound of the Bell (1976). The complete broadcast is presented here together with background notes and rare images.”

Here’s what to know about the rock musician.

When did David Surkamp die?

David Surkamp died unexpectedly Oct. 13 at 73 years old, Steiling said on behalf of Pavlov’s Dog in a Facebook post.

“He always allowed the musicians around him to shine in their strengths, generous with the spotlight and appreciative of what each brought to the music. No matter what life held for him, he came alive onstage. Even on his hardest days, when the lights came up and the count-off began, he was a consummate performer. If he was playing music, it was a great day,” the post stated.

Who was David Surkamp?

A St. Louis native, David Surkamp was the lead vocalist and an original member of progressive rock band Pavlov’s Dog. The group was formed in St. Louis in the 1970s and released its first two albums, “Pampered Menial” in 1975 and “At The Sound Of The Bell” in 1976.

Pavlov’s Dog then disbanded, but later reunited to release its third album “Los In America” in 1990, and reunited again in the 21st century for a 30th anniversary concert. The group came back together in 2005 with the addition of Surkamp’s wife Sara on vocals and guitar and Steiling on electric violin, and performed at the Arrow Rock Festival in the Netherlands.

The group had released an album in 2025, “Wanderlust,” performed a live show in April, and, according to its website, had several 2027 tour dates planned around Australia.

Several fellow Pavlov’s Dog members have died over the years, including original violinist Siegfried Carver, multi-instrumentalist Doug Rayburn, bassist Rick Stockton and keyboardist David Hamilton.

Surkamp’s wife Sara Surkamp died in November 2025 and he is survived by their children, Saylor and Evan.

“As we grapple with the magnitude and shock of this loss, we take comfort in the incredible community that surrounded him: his family, his wonderfully enduring friendships, and the global family brought together through Pavlov’s Dog and the music he gave to the world. David’s heart held so much love for his wife Sara, and we hope he has found peace with the love he has missed so dearly,” Steiling’s post read.
