Cason Wallace Signs Five-Year, $139 Million Extension with OKC Thunder
Cason Wallace is staying put with the OKC Thunder. The guard just put pen to paper on a five-year, $139 million rookie-scale contract extension, locking him down with the team through the middle of the decade. This move, reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, came just before the Monday deadline to avoid restricted free agency.
Wallace had a stellar season last year, putting up career highs of 8.6 points and 2.6 assists per game. He shot 43.2% from the field and 35.1% from deep, but his real impact was on defense. He led the league with 150 steals and earned a spot on the All-Defensive second team, showing he’s a force on that end.
This extension is a big sign of confidence from the Thunder, especially with Lu Dort now gone. Wallace is set to become the team’s top defender, filling a crucial role. It also shows ownership’s commitment after a summer of cost-cutting moves. OKC traded Dort, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe for future picks, which helped them stay $6.9 million under the second apron.
Looking ahead, the Thunder have team options on Ajay Mitchell, Jared McCain, and Jaylin Williams for 2027-28, the same year Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s super max contract kicks in. Securing Wallace long-term is part of their plan to keep the championship-caliber squad together.
