Bob Mackie’s surprising cause of death is revealed
Fashion designer Bob Mackie, who dressed superstars like Cher, Beyoncé, and Diana Ross, died on Sept. 14 in Palm Springs at age 87. His publicist first said pneumonia was the cause, but the death certificate obtained by Us Weekly lists the real reason: a subarachnoid hemorrhage and blunt head trauma. The certificate says Mackie fell on Sept. 11 at the home of his longtime design director, Joseph McFate, where he was staying. He was battling pneumonia at the time, and a healthcare professional was with him when he fell. He died days later at Desert Regional Medical Center. Mackie was cremated on Sept. 17, and his ashes were scattered off San Diego. Fellow designer Tom Ford noted how Mackie’s heavily beaded, body-fitting gowns shaped modern red carpet fashion. Following his death, stars like Elton John and Cher posted tributes. Cher wrote on X, ‘Bob has gone up to heaven. Knowing him, he’s bringing Sequins, Beads, & his sketch pad. Good nite sweet Prince.’
