Bob Huggins’ family says he has a progressive cognitive condition – USFTB
CINCINNATI —
The family of former University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins says he is living with a progressive cognitive condition that has begun affecting his memory and daily life.
His family shared the health update days before Huggins is set to be formally inducted into the University of Cincinnati’s James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame.
The induction is set to take place on Oct. 23, the night before Cincinnati’s homecoming football game against Texas Tech.
“Bob is living with a progressive cognitive condition that has begun to affect his memory, and aspects of his daily life. While the family has chosen to keep this matter private over the past several months, they believe this is an appropriate time to share the news with the many people who have supported Bob throughout his remarkable career, particularly as he prepares to be honored with induction into the University of Cincinnati’s James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame,” a statement reads.
Huggins is the all-time winningest head coach in Cincinnati basketball history, leading UC to 14 NCAA tournaments in his 16 years in Clifton.
A 2022 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Huggins led UC to 399 wins from 1989 to 2005. The Bearcats made the 1992 Final Four under Huggins, kicking off a run of 14-straight NCAA tournament appearances.
Huggins’ 399 wins with UC were the most at any stop of his career, including more than his 16-year tenure at West Virginia (345 wins).
“Bob is deeply grateful for the tremendous honor being bestowed upon him by the University of Cincinnati. His years leading the Bearcats represent an unforgettable chapter in his life, filled with cherished relationships, remarkable accomplishments, and memories that will always hold a special place in his heart. He’s looking forward to returning to Cincinnati this weekend, celebrating with former players and friends, and sharing in a moment that recognizes not only his accomplishments, but also the enduring bonds formed along the way,” a joint statement from the family and university reads.
Huggins family shared that though they recognize the challenges that lie ahead, they remain focused on the relationships, experiences, and moments that bring him joy.
“He continues to be surrounded by the unwavering love and support of his wife, June; his daughters, Jenna and Jacqueline; and his entire family,” a statement reads.
The university also extended their support as the family navigates the diagnosis.
“Cincinnati Athletics is excited to welcome Coach Bob Huggins and his family back to campus this weekend for his induction into the James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame. Coach Huggins is undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history. He restored Cincinnati basketball to national prominence, ignited a passion for the Bearcats throughout our city and left an indelible mark on generations of student-athletes. We extend our heartfelt support to Coach Huggins and his family as they navigate this next chapter together,” the statement reads.
