De Minaur Wants a Serve Clock to Stop Players Like Zverev from Dragging Out Matches
Alex de Minaur has thrown his weight behind a rule change that could put an end to slow serving routines, targeting players like Alexander Zverev. The Australian star, who recently got the better of Zverev at the Laver Cup, thinks tennis needs a shot clock between the first and second serves. He even went a step further, suggesting a rule where players only get one ball toss. If they mess up the toss or decide not to serve, it’s an automatic fault.
De Minaur spoke about this after cruising through his opening match at the Shanghai Masters, beating Rei Sakamoto in straight sets. He believes limiting the time between serves will stop players from dragging out the game and restarting their routines after a bad toss. Zverev faced heat earlier this year at the US Open for taking ages to bounce the ball before serving.
Now, De Minaur is focused on his run in Shanghai, where he faces Karen Khachanov in the next round. A win there could push him closer to the ATP Finals.
