Iran Weighs US Proposal via Qatar Amid Ongoing Tensions

Iran stated on Sunday that it is still examining the details of the latest proposal from the United States, which was communicated through Qatari mediators. The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Ismail Bagaei, mentioned in a press briefing that preliminary considerations have already been shared with the Qataris during a short stop in Doha by the Iranian delegation returning from New York to Tehran. He added that further reviews will be conducted and additional observations will be passed on to the other side.

Bagaei did not reveal specifics about the US offer but noted that Iran’s positions were conveyed to the mediator during that brief layover, and the evaluation process is ongoing. He also dismissed reports suggesting that Tehran had proposed resuming International Atomic Energy Agency inspections in exchange for reduced economic sanctions. Instead, Bagaei emphasized that Iran’s focus is on communicating its conditions within what is called the seven-day plan, which includes demands like ending hostilities in the Middle East and releasing frozen funds.

The spokesman highlighted that Iran’s main priority at this stage is the Strait of Hormuz, and its reopening requires concrete actions from the US, such as ending the naval blockade and lifting sanctions. This plan was previously rejected by US President Donald Trump. The context involves a memorandum of understanding from June, mediated by Pakistan, which was disrupted by alleged Iranian attacks on ships and US bombings in southern Iran.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi defended diplomatic negotiations as the only way to end the war, warning that there is no military solution. The conflict, started by the US and Israel against Iran in February, is at a deadlock with intensified sanctions and occasional attacks. Iran’s army announced plans to enhance its missile capabilities in response.

Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf, the parliament speaker and chief negotiator, reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until US meets seven conditions based on the Islamabad memorandum. He stressed that Iran won’t yield to economic pressure or military actions, relying instead on real enemy behavior rather than contradictory statements.

Additionally, Iran resumed flights to Najaf in Iraq after securing a US exception to sanctions that had halted air connections.
