Final Fantasy Resonance Review: A Worthy Successor with Its Own Charm

Square Enix has been on a roll lately, taking old mobile games and turning them into full-fledged RPG experiences. Final Fantasy Resonance is another win for them, proving that reusing assets can lead to something great. It’s a fun game with a cast you’ll grow to love and character customization that fans of the Final Fantasy V job system will adore.

Resonance draws from the first season of the defunct Final Fantasy Brave Exvius mobile game, but it’s far from a simple port. It’s been upgraded with HD-2D graphics that make the already impressive sprites look even better. Square Enix has clearly taken feedback to heart, and it shows. The game stands out with its detailed character designs and stunning pixel-art cinematic moments, setting it apart from other HD-2D titles like Octopath Traveler.

What really makes Resonance shine is how it handles its references to past Final Fantasy games. The story might seem like a vehicle for nostalgia at first, but it’s deeper than that. Gameplay involves summoning ‘Visions’ – characters from other FF games – who act as projections. They teach skills like the job system in Final Fantasy V, boost stats like espers in Final Fantasy VI, and can unleash super attacks with breathtaking CGI. It’s a clever way to pay homage while adding depth to combat.

Each character can equip a Vision to gain new abilities. For instance, Rain, a fire-based fighter, can wear Cecil to access light and magic. As they fight together, Cecil grows stronger and offers customizable skills. It’s a system that will feel right at home for anyone who loved Final Fantasy V’s job mechanics.

Despite the callbacks, Resonance is ultimately Rain’s story. He might borrow traits from heroes like Cloud or Tidus, but he’s relatable and easy to root for. His friend Lasswell has his own unique charm, with a nobility that feels fresh. The supporting cast clicks well, thanks to witty dialogue and solid voice acting. As a Final Fantasy XIV fan, I was thrilled by the subtle shoutouts that made me smile.

The battle system is a classic turn-based affair, similar to Final Fantasy X, with a clear turn order. Each character brings a distinct style – Lasswell with ice, Jake with wind, Lid with earth attacks. It keeps things interesting without overcomplicating.

Resonance is a breeze to play, with generous fast travel and dungeons that don’t overstay their welcome. A 40-hour runtime is perfect for today’s RPGs. However, the world could use more depth; towns are lively, but the overworld feels thin, and dungeons lack variety. Random encounters are spaced well, but an auto-battle option would help when you’re just traveling.

I expected to enjoy Resonance for its fan service, but I ended up loving it for its originality. It honors Final Fantasy’s past while building something new. In a series that’s still finding its footing, this game is a solid recommendation – it stands on its own legs rather than just leaning on nostalgia.
