Phoenix Weather Alert: Flash Floods and Thunderstorms to Hit Wednesday
A flood watch is in effect for much of Arizona, including metro Phoenix, from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon. Flash flooding is expected in many areas. There’s a lot of talk about tornado chances, but the main worry is flash floods and microbursts. Last October, a similar weather setup led to a big microburst in Tempe. First Alert Weather Days are set for Wednesday and Thursday, bringing showers and thunderstorms. The rain could slow down travel over two days, with up to an inch of rain in some spots. Most places will see less. The mountains north and east of the Valley might get more rain. The storms are caused by a Pacific low-pressure system parked off California’s coast, pulling moisture into Arizona and making the atmosphere unstable. According to the Storm Prediction Center, thunderstorms are likely across Arizona, with eastern Arizona facing a 15% chance of severe weather, which could extend to the far East Valley. Timing will be key as the storm rolls in. Temperatures will start in the low-90s on Tuesday but drop to the 70s by the end of the week.
