Update: Tornado Warning for Clay County – Seek Safe Shelter Now! – USFTB
The National Weather Service has issued an updated tornado warning for Clay County, effective until 8 p.m. on Tuesday. At 7:48 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Missouri City, or 6 miles southwest of Excelsior Springs, moving east at 35 mph. This storm brings dangerous flying debris, which can damage or destroy mobile homes, roofs, windows, and vehicles, and likely cause tree damage. The warning applies to Excelsior Springs, Mosby, and Prathersville.
Residents should take immediate action to seek shelter. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a well-built building, away from windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, head to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. Tornadoes are hard to see at night, so take cover now.
Here are some ways to stay safe during a tornado:
– If indoors: Go to your basement, safe room, or an interior room without windows. Bring your pets if time allows.
– At work or school: Follow your tornado drill protocol and go to the designated shelter area. Avoid large open rooms like cafeterias or gymnasiums.
– If outside: Seek immediate shelter in a secure building. Sheds, mobile homes, and tents are not safe.
– In a vehicle: Drive to the closest shelter. If that’s not possible, crouch in your car and shield your head, or leave and find shelter in a ditch.
Consider having an emergency kit ready. The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends including:
– Water: one gallon per person for at least three days
– Food: at least a three-day supply
– Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
– Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
– Flashlight
– First-aid kit
– Whistle
– Dust masks
– Plastic sheeting and duct tape
– Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties
– Manual can opener
– Local maps
