Rui Hachimura Eager to Face Former Lakers Team in Clippers Rivalry Game
Rui Hachimura is starting a new chapter in his NBA career, now wearing the Clippers uniform after spending the last three and a half seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. As a free agent, he signed a two-year, $28 million deal with the Clippers, and he’s buzzing with anticipation for Friday night’s game against his old team at Crypto.com Arena. “I’m really looking forward to it,” Hachimura said after the Clippers’ season opener. “I can’t wait to see my former teammates and coaches. Playing in that arena is always special, and I’m excited for the challenge.”
Hachimura, who began his career with the Washington Wizards before joining the Lakers in 2023, became a key player for Los Angeles. Over his time there, he averaged 12.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, showcasing a solid 41.5% three-point shooting. In his Clippers debut, he contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, and two assists in 23 minutes, starting the game strong.
His former coach, JJ Redick, who now leads the Lakers, praised Hachimura’s skills and character. “He’s one of the best shooters I’ve coached, with a great mid-range game,” Redick said. “But what stands out is his consistent joy and personality every day. He’s a favorite among us.”
Austin Reaves, a Lakers star, shared a lighthearted memory: “I wasn’t sure if he spoke English at first, but he’s an amazing guy and player. I miss him around the locker room.”
The Clippers are set to take on the Lakers Friday night, with tip-off around 7 p.m. PT. Hachimura is focused on helping his new team secure a win, despite the emotional pull of facing his old squad.
