MNPD said a westbound Toyota RAV4 rear-ended a pedal tavern near 1033 Demonbreun Street around 8:30 p.m.
Nine of the 12 passengers on the pedal tavern were injured, with at least two seriously injured, MNPD said. The victims were an “older crowd,” MNPD spokesperson Kris Mumford said.
Mumford said she is unsure where the victims are from at this time.
The driver of the RAV4 and the pedal tavern were not injured.
Mumford said the RAV4 driver reported that he was distracted when the crash happened. Police are not sure what exactly the driver was distracted with at the time of the crash.
Mumford told WSMV4 that crashes involving pedal taverns are not common, adding that this is the first one she knew of.
“Of course it’s something you do worry about, but we’ll be investigating it, talking to the driver, and all of the patients have been transported to area hospitals. We hope they all recover well,” Mumford said.
The crash scene will likely be closed for several hours as police continue investigating.
