Reed Sheppard’s Rockets Future: Is It on the Line?
Preseason or not, there are already some worrying signs for Reed Sheppard with the Rockets. We all know it’s just exhibition games, but the team’s added depth this summer has put Sheppard in a tough spot. Bogdan Bogdanovic is looking sharp, hitting threes at a solid clip, and Marcus Smart is still bringing that intense defense and ball-handling. Fred VanVleet might not be scoring efficiently, but he’s dishing out assists and keeping turnovers low, making the offense flow better when he’s on the floor. So, where does that leave Sheppard? He’s been lights-out from beyond the arc, shooting 44% on eight attempts per game, showing he’s got the shooting touch that made him a top pick. But his defense is still a weak spot—he looks like a liability out there, and it might be enough to keep him on the bench. The Rockets have so many guards now that it’s hard to see Sheppard getting consistent minutes, especially with Udoka leaning on the veterans. It’s a shame because he’s been on a good path, but this season could see his role shrink, and that’s not ideal for a third-year player. Maybe he’ll find a way to force his way into the rotation, but right now, it feels like his future is up in the air.
