Actor Coulier Fights Cancer with Red Wings, Shares Survival Story
John Coulier, a 67-year-old actor and cancer survivor, attended the Red Wings game at Little Caesars Arena for two reasons: he’s a huge fan from St. Clair Shores, Michigan, and to support Hockey Fights Cancer Night. Coulier and former NHL player Mike Barber wore special jerseys during the game against the Philadelphia Flyers to raise awareness and funds. Coulier stressed the importance of early screenings, saying, ‘Early screenings saved my life twice now with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and carcinoma. It makes a big difference. It’s not sexy, but get that prostate exam, get that colonoscopy, get those mammograms. I’m encouraging people to do so.’ Hockey Fights Cancer, a program by the NHL and NHLPA, is in its 28th year and has raised over $53 million. Since partnering with the V Foundation in 2023, it’s brought in more than $12.3 million for research and supported 42 grants. The night was emotional for the team due to the passing of Jenny Baumann, wife of assistant athletic trainer Russ Baumann, from cancer. Coach Todd McLellan choked up, calling it ‘personal.’
