Cal coach Tosh Lupoi pulled a surprise by benching star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele for the Wake Forest game, even though he was cleared from a concussion. Backup Jackson Brousseau, who stepped in after Sagapolutele got hurt, started under center and was named a game captain. Lupoi said it’s now a quarterback competition, calling both players ‘ballers.’ Brousseau has thrown three touchdown passes without a pick in his time starting, while Sagapolutele has struggled with five interceptions in three and a half games this year. A win Saturday could tie Cal for second in the ACC.
