Lakers Coach JJ Redick Bluntly Assesses Bronny James’ Preseason Struggles
Bronny James is facing a tough start in his third NBA season, especially without his father LeBron by his side. In the Lakers’ first four preseason games, the young guard has struggled to find his footing, putting up just 11 points and 12 turnovers overall. The low point came in a loss to the Warriors, where he went scoreless in 11 minutes, adding only one rebound, one steal, and four turnovers.
After the game, Lakers coach JJ Redick was straightforward about James’ performance. He mentioned that while James had a good summer and September with the team, he hasn’t played well in the preseason games. Redick pointed out that rhythm and the mix of players he’s been teamed with—often two-way guys or recent additions—might be factors, saying it’s not setting him up for success.
Despite the shaky start, the Lakers have locked in James’ contract for the 2026-27 season at $2.29 million, part of a four-year deal he signed after being drafted in 2024. With 16 players on the roster, the team needs to cut at least one before Monday’s deadline. James, who played 42 games last season and shot 38.6% from three-point range, now faces an uncertain role, especially with stars like Luka Dončić not always in the lineup.
As the Lakers prep for their final preseason game against the Nuggets, all eyes are on how James will bounce back.
