VisionQuest: Paul Bettany and James Spader Unpack Vision’s Identity Crisis in Marvel’s New Series

Terry Matalas has wrapped up what turned out to be a really beloved group of shows, and Paul Bettany thinks he’s done an extraordinary job. He says it manages to feel like WandaVision but also stands on its own – quite the magic trick. Vision is grappling with his memories of Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen. The love they shared feels artificial to him now, and he’s not sure what to make of it. Showrunner Terry Matalas explains that this is a story about a guy going through an identity crisis, which means a lot of time spent in his own head. Matalas wanted to explore Vision’s relationship with Ultron, so he imagined extending that final scene from Avengers: Age of Ultron into a whole series. James Spader, who hasn’t been on screen since 2015, read the script with fresh eyes and found it worked brilliantly as a standalone story. Paul Bettany was eager to dive into the complex dynamic between Vision and Ultron. He wanted to blend the Pinocchio and Frankenstein themes – one about becoming a real boy, the other about questioning who made you and your purpose. When Matalas suggested bringing back Spader as Ultron, Bettany was all in, turning it into a story about fathers and sons and intergenerational damage, but with a twist in these robots’ corrupted files. Vision’s quiet life is shattered when a bounty hunter called Paladin, played by Todd Stashwick, is hired to track him down. To lure Vision out, Paladin kidnaps a young boy named Thomas Shepherd, who might be Vision’s reincarnated son. Thomas is struggling with his memories of Wanda and Vision, and both he and Vision want to understand their strange connection. Bettany relates to this, sharing that his own eldest son isn’t biologically his but feels exactly like his. Vision doesn’t have to face fatherhood alone. The show is really about identity, and his AI personas play a key role. F.R.I.D.A.Y. is about socialization, J.A.R.V.I.S. provides security, and then there’s E.D.I.T.H., who’s fun and experienced but fears being expendable. She pushes Vision to experience things because, as an AI, you know everything but have never truly tasted it. E.D.I.T.H., introduced in Spider-Man: Far from Home, now handles Vision’s recreational needs, game therapy, and weapons. Actress Hampshire says the coolest part is E.D.I.T.H.’s humanity – her massive desire for life. Ultron is also interested in his own humanity. Since Vision kept a backup of him, Ultron has developed an appreciation for society, embracing art and culture. He might understand humans better than they understand themselves, but he’s unpredictable. Spader notes that Ultron is even more dangerous now because he’s older and more mature, having absorbed everything humanity has to offer over 12 years of imprisonment. Matalas says the know-it-all Ultron as a father figure for Vision creates a nuanced dynamic. The tone shifts constantly, and the creative team, including Bettany and Spader, were in complete sync. For Bettany, Vision has always been in a state of change and self-discovery. When he meets fans, they’re often younger, just like him trying to figure out who they are. The show’s culmination is about Vision accepting who he is, which gives him strength in the finale – and that was always the plan.
