Virginia Health Leaders Sound Alarm: Get Your Flu Shot Now!

Virginia health leaders are reminding everyone to roll up their sleeves for flu shots early this season. They say getting vaccinated sooner gives your body a head start on building protection before the flu really starts to spread.

Officials from Riverside Health, the Virginia Department of Health, and the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association are teaming up to push flu vaccinations and help more people stay safe.

“It’s not just the flu. The flu can land you in the hospital or worse,” warned Dr. Michael S. Oshiki, president of Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Virginia State Health Commissioner Cameron Webb explained that getting vaccinated now could ease the pressure on hospitals when the season peaks. “We’re only in mid-October, and flu season hasn’t hit its worst yet. We usually see the biggest surge in January and February here in Virginia,” Webb noted.

Last year, Virginia saw around 127,000 flu-related emergency visits, and nationwide, an estimated 32 million Americans got sick. “Those aren’t just numbers—they’re people. That’s why it’s so crucial to get your shot,” said Sean T. Connaughton, president and CEO of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Health officials caution that even mild symptoms can quickly escalate, leading to serious illness that might require oxygen or advanced care.

“We can stop deaths, prevent complications, and avoid getting sick. If we can prevent it, why not get vaccinated?” Connaughton emphasized.

Riverside Health is working with local and state partners to make flu vaccines free and easy to access for residents.

Leaders also point out that vaccination doesn’t just protect you—it helps shield friends, coworkers, and others who are more vulnerable to severe flu.

Webb suggests aiming for vaccination by Halloween to build immunity before the virus goes rampant. “Try to get your vaccine by Halloween. It’s a good reminder of when to get your flu shot,” he said.

Additionally, officials encourage simple habits like washing hands and covering coughs and sneezes to keep illnesses at bay.
