Shanghai picks: Zverev vs. De Minaur, Davidovich Fokina vs. Gea – USFTB
Quarterfinal action at the Shanghai Masters gets underway on Thursday, when Alexander Zverev continues his title bid against Alex de Minaur. Arthur Gea tries to keep his run going at the expense of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
(1) Alexander Zverev vs. (9) Alex de Minaur
Zverev and De Minaur will be squaring off for the 13th time in their careers when they collide in the quarterfinals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Thursday. The head-to-head series stands at 8-4 in favor of Zverev, who is sweeping De Minaur 7-0 in traditional tournament competition. That’s right; all four of the Australian’s victories have come in team events. Zverev is 3-0 against De Minaur at the Masters 1000 level, including a 6-1, 6-4 rout at this same Shanghai event in 2018.
Although the second-ranked German has not looked overly dominant this fortnight, he has done enough to advance — even when a mental lull could have been expected after he clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking when Carlos Alcaraz lost to Zizou Bergs in round three. Instead, Zverev followed up victories over Yibing Wu and Quentin Halys by beating Alexander Bublik in a third-set tiebreaker on Tuesday. De Minaur, who finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in Beijing, opened in Shanghai with wins over Rei Sakamoto and Karen Khachanov (he also got a walkover from Alex Molcan). The world No. 9 can never be discounted in any situation, but the history in this matchup favors Zverev substantially.

Arthur Gea vs. (25) Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
This has been Gea’s breakthrough season on the ATP Tour, and it is showing no signs of slowing down. The 21-year-old Frenchman had never won an ATP-level match prior to 2026, but he has won 15 of them this season. Gea, who lifted the trophy in Los Cabos and reached the last 16 at the U.S. Open, has maintained momentum in Shanghai with victories over Jaime Faria, Ugo Humbert, Ben Shelton, and Jakub Mensik.
Up next for the world No. 56 is Davidovich Fokina, whom he has never faced. It has been a busy Asian swing for the Spaniard, who captured the Chengdu title, lost right away in Tokyo to Matteo Berrettini after getting almost no rest, and then dismissed Jenson Brooksby, Frances Tiafoe, and Hubert Hurkacz earlier this fortnight. Davidovich Fokina required third-set tiebreakers against both Tiafoe and Hurkacz. With the world No. 26 surely running on fumes and Gea riding high on confidence, a minor upset could be in the cards.
