Andy Roddick’s Candid Take on Tennis Tantrums: ‘Break Racquets, Not Your Toe
Andy Roddick isn’t one to hold back, and the former American star recently shared his blunt views on the frustration boiling over at the Shanghai Masters. With Alexander Bublik smashing his racquet and Frances Tiafoe struggling to contain his anger after tough defeats, Roddick had little sympathy for those who find such outbursts unacceptable. He summed it up perfectly: ‘Post US Open, everyone just loses their s**t.’ Roddick actually found Bublik’s racquet-smashing amusing, saying, ‘I like that. Get your money’s worth. Don’t do it once if you got six in the chamber.’ But he warned against going too far, especially when Bublik started kicking things. ‘Don’t kick. You can break a toe. Don’t hit. Don’t bring your hands into it.’ Similarly, reacting to Tiafoe’s frustration, Roddick advised, ‘No kicking benches. No kicking things that could win against your toe. No hitting things that can win against your hand. Breaking racquets… I don’t care. I think it’s funny.’ Roddick knows this view might not sit well with tennis traditionalists, but he doesn’t mind. ‘I’m like, yeah, I know, I know… it just doesn’t bother me and I always find it funny and I laugh every time I see it. Maybe it’s just because I have been there. I have done what they’ve done. I have broken rackets while they’re still inside the bag that they got strung in.’
