The Oklahoma City Thunder made several roster additions during the offseason, but one of their most important newcomers will never enter a game. Maral Javadifar’s arrival as Oklahoma City’s director of athletic performance could quietly influence whether this talented team remains healthy enough to reclaim the NBA championship.
Javadifar brings a fascinating background to Oklahoma City. She previously worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including during their Super Bowl-winning 2020 season. Instead of limiting their search to familiar basketball candidates, the Thunder added someone with experience preparing NFL players for an entirely different form of physical punishment.

That perspective could become incredibly valuable. An NBA season brings constant travel, repetitive movement and 82 games of accumulated wear. Football presents different challenges, but Javadifar’s experience managing powerful athletes could help the Thunder develop more creative plans for strength, recovery and injury prevention.
Her early work with Aday Mara is already especially interesting. Javadifar reportedly traveled to Spain and worked with the rookie during the offseason. Mara then entered the preseason looking noticeably stronger and more comfortable than he appeared during Summer League, scoring 34 points and collecting 15 rebounds across his first two games without missing a field-goal attempt.
It would be unfair to credit one staff member for everything Mara has accomplished. His development also reflects personal effort, coaching and natural adjustment. Still, his early progress offers an encouraging example of what Javadifar could provide behind the scenes.
Oklahoma City learned how quickly injuries can alter a championship pursuit when Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell were unavailable during critical portions of its previous playoff run. No performance staff can eliminate injuries, especially across such a demanding season. However, helping players become stronger, recover properly and withstand difficult matchups could determine whether the Thunder’s most important pieces are available when the postseason arrives.

Mark Daigneault has praised Javadifar’s basketball knowledge, varied experience and consistency. Those qualities fit an organization that has repeatedly searched beyond traditional thinking to create advantages.
Players will receive the attention if Oklahoma City wins another championship. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will produce the highlights, Chet Holmgren will protect the rim and Williams will be asked to deliver in the biggest moments. Behind them, however, Javadifar could help ensure those stars remain physically prepared to finish what they start. In organizations as successful as the Thunder. Every variable behind the scenes is of the utmost importance.
