Atlanta Dream’s Tiny Arena Choice for WNBA Finals: A Disgrace or Just Bad Luck?

The Atlanta Dream are probably going to play their WNBA Finals games at Gateway Center Arena, which only holds 3,500 people. That’s tiny compared to places like Chase Center, where the Golden State Valkyries pack in over 18,000 fans per game. The Dream have been bragging about sellouts at Gateway for three years straight, but let’s be real—those aren’t the same as selling out a big arena. It’s mostly friends and family, no extra guests allowed, and it feels more like a backyard party than a major championship event.

This is a huge missed opportunity for the league, especially with the WNBA booming in attendance and viewership. The Dream are missing out on big ticket sales, suite rentals, and merch money. Plus, the setup at Gateway is cramped—one level, limited bar seating, and courtside only at one basket. It’s not ideal for the media or fans. Sure, the team is moving to State Farm Arena in 2027, but that doesn’t excuse messing up the Finals now. They had a chance to showcase Atlanta’s talent, like Angel Reese, and draw in new fans, but instead, they’re limiting access.

It’s partly their own fault. As an independent team, they don’t have a partnership with the Hawks or State Farm, so they’re stuck leasing Gateway for games that don’t conflict with other events. This year, they managed to move some playoff games to State Farm, but the Finals clash with Hawks schedules and a concert. Unlike the Valkyries, who can shuffle things because they’re under the Warriors’ umbrella, the Dream don’t have that flexibility. They should have planned better since January, but it’s unclear if they did.

For a team that’s been to the Finals before but never won, this could hurt their momentum. Winning now would be huge for the players and the franchise’s future, but playing in such a small venue might keep fans away from a historic moment. The Dream built this moment, but they might not get to see if the people will show up.
